Binsar is a small town in the state of Uttarakhand and is located amidst dense green forests. It is famous for the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. Located at an altitude of 2,480 meters on the Jhandi Dhar hills of Kumaon, Binsar is frequently visited by tourists who come here to enjoy the wildlife and to witness the different species of flora and fauna found here. The place is known for its greenery and is surrounded by virgin forests of oak, rhododendron, pine and deodar all around. It is an ideal place to can catch a glimpse of some of the beautiful peaks of the mighty Himalayas. Especially from Zero Point, the snow-covered peaks of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Kedarnath, and quite a few others are clearly visible.


The charming Binsar hill-stations is situated in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. It is perched at an elevation of 2400 meters above the sea level, on the Jhandi Dhar hills and is one of the highest hill-station in the Kumaon region. On visiting this scenic place, tourist can feast their eyes with awe-inspiring views of the greater Himalayas, dotted with Alpine flora, ferns and varieties of wild flowers.

Like most of the hill-stations in India, Binsar also has its glorious past. As per history, the hill station was the ancient capital of the Chand Raj Kings, who ruled over the region in the 7th and 3th centuries. A revered temple dedicated to Lord Shiva witness the bygone regime of King Kalyan. Apart from this, the hill-station is best known to be the home of wild flora and faunas. Prime Attractions of Binsar :

The major attractions in Binsar are the snow-clad peaks like Chaukhamba, Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Kedarnath, which are clearly visible from the here. On driving 300 kms away from the hill-station, one can enjoy the awesome views of the great Himalayan peaks.

Bineshwar Mahadev Temple :
As the name of the holy place indicates, Bineshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built by King Kalyan during 13 century and hence, presents the brilliant architectural style of erstwhile eras.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary :
This wild abode provides shelter to more than 200 bird species and wild animals like Braking Deer, Himalayan Bear, Leopard, Fox, Musk Deer, Langur, Porcupine, Panthers, Wild Boars, Monkeys, Flying Squirrel, Chital etc. The forest is thick and one need to be careful, while exploring on foot.

Excursions from Binsar :

Almora(26Km.) :

Almora is the nearest hill-station to Binsar. It is encircled by Pithoragarh to the east, Garhwal to the west, Bageshwar to the north and Nainital to the south. This picturesque hill resort blessed with the majestic views of Himalayas, exquisite wildlife locations, gushing waterfalls and a number of tourist destinations. Almora is well-known for treasuring rich cultural heritage and the tradition of making antique handicraft items.

The district headquarters of Amora has still maintained its old traditional character which can be felt in the tiled roofed houses and paved streets. Places of tourist interest here are Bright-end corner, Chitai Temple, Kasar Devi, Deer Park, Nanda Devi Temple & ram Krishna Mission Ashram.

Chitai Temple or Gollu Devta(44 kms) :

Dedicated to Gollu Devta(an incarnation of Gaur Bhairav), Chitai temple is among the holy places in Uttarakhand. It is said that, the temple carries the magic of fulfilling wishes, asked by ardent devotees before the deity. According to mythic belief, pilgrims offer bells along with letters, treasured in different parts of the temple.

Gananath(31Km.) :

The temple is situated at a height of 2116 mts. Above sea level which is famous for its caves and Shiva temple. Jalna : 959 kms) At a height of above 5500 feet, Jalna Provides a wide panoramic view of the Himalayas. A number of orchards produce a variety of fruits such as apricots, peaches, pears, plums and apples.

Bageshwar(60 kms) :

An excursion to Bageshwar offers a chance to get around the mighty confluence of the pious Saryu and Gomti rivers. The place has derived its name from a popular temple- Bagnath. It is devoted to the worship of Lord Shiva and every year, it attract thousand of pilgrims from different parts of the world.

Katarmal(42Km.) :

Katarmal is a must for history lovers. It houses the famous Sun Temple built by the Katyuri Rajas some 800 and 900 years ago, atop a steep hill.

Jageshwar(60Km.) :

Located at an elevation of 1, 870 meters above the sea level, Jageshwar is a remarkable tourist destination in the Kumaon region. It is a divine temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which has been constructed during medieval India. The 8th Dwadasa Jyotirlingas placed inside the temple and the nearby Deodar forest carries great mythological significance.

The temple town, housing one of the 12 Jyotirlingas to be found in India stands on the Almora-Pithoragarth road, in the beautiful Jataganga valley. The grand temple complex, consisting of 124 temples is famous not only for its exquisite craftsmanship but also for its pristine beauty of being located among thick deodar woods.
